In order for smart grids to ensure operations security, they must develop new types of solutions to counteract cyber-physical threats. In this study, a multisensor temporal prediction algorithm for wide-area monitoring and control systems (WAMCS) is developed to be able to analyze synchrophasor measurements and detect abnormal data caused by sensor faults and/or cyberattacks prior to the data compromising the grid's performance. It is validated using a real-time software-in-the-loop (SIL) evaluation method with a flexible AC transmission system controller as part of a demonstration showing that predictive intelligence (i.e., using data analysis to predict future system states) will transform how managers manage their grids, improve the resiliency of their grids, and provide protection to our critical energy infrastructure as the world becomes more digital as well as more interconnected.
